House Majority Leader Steve Scalise should not expect any help from Donald Trump in his bid to become speaker of the House, sources tell The Messenger.
Scalise hasn’t been loyal enough to the former president and 2024 presidential frontrunner, so he shouldn’t count on Trump to help woo enough GOP holdouts — who include Trump allies — to push him over the finish line, they say.
Scalise, who on Wednesday morning won a closed-door, simple majority vote to become the House GOP’s nominee for speaker, has nowhere near the 217 votes needed to clinch the deal on the House floor to wield the speaker’s gavel. He now finds himself fighting to court the support of GOP hardliners to win.
