An Alabama library is being accused of religious discrimination for abruptly canceling a book reading event featuring Christian actor and author Kirk Cameron. Officials with the Huntsville-Madison County Library announced Thursday that the event featuring Cameron and another Brave Books author, Riley Gaines, and organized by Moms For Liberty was initially set to take place on Aug. 5 in a meeting room at the library.
But after officials say the event’s organizers reported 20 people would be at the reading, the library “learned that event organizers are now expecting over 300 people, a number that far exceeds any meeting room capacity within the Huntsville-Madison County Library System,” according to spokesperson Jay Hixon. The library consulted with police, fire and other officials and “explored options to make the event logistically possible.”
Read the full article. The anti-LGBTQ hate group First Liberty Institute has sent the library a threat to sue on the grounds of “unconstitutional religious discrimination.”
As you see in the gloating Fox News tweet below, this afternoon the Alabama library “caved,” but the Fox report doesn’t say how they intend to handle the projected size of the crowd.
Last month Cameron petitioned the federal government to investigate the American Library Association on the same grounds. In late May, Cameron launched a tour of libraries to promote his anti-LGBTQ children’s book, Pride Comes Before the Fall.
In March, his complaints about a Tennessee library resulted in its director getting fired. Library staffers were also deluged with harassment and a bomb threat.
